BlackBerry is making a major investment in a Kanata automated vehicle centre, which is expected to create 800 jobs and retain 300 more.

It announced $310-million for the Canadian Automated Vehicles Institute on Friday, while the federal government has promised $40-million.

Part of the funding is paying for an automated vehicle test track, which is opening next month.

CEO of the Canadian Automated Vehicles Institute Barry Kirk told 1310 NEWS’ The Rick Gibbons Show, his company will be hiring local people right away, and not all of the jobs are software and tech-related. He said there will be many accounting, law, marketing and sales jobs as well.

Another chunk of the funding is going toward a co-op program, which will give more than 1,000 students the opportunity to work in the new-tech environment.
